Kibale Forest National Park is located in western Uganda, covering an area of 795km south of Fort Portal. The park is famous for being the best destination for chimpanzee trekking safaris in East Africa.
Kibale Forest National Park has the highest number of primates in Africa, with over 13 species, including chimpanzees. The park is also home to 71 mammals, 372 bird species, and 350 plant species.

Primates
Kibale Forest National Park is renowned for its exceptional primate diversity, with an impressive 13 species calling the park home. Chimpanzees are undoubtedly the most iconic and sought-after residents, but the park is also a sanctuary for several other endangered and rare primate species.
Notably, Kibale Forest National Park boasts the largest population of endangered red Colobus and L’Hoest monkeys in East Africa. Additionally, the park is inhabited by a variety of other fascinating primates, including blue monkeys, black and white Colobus monkeys, olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, bush babies, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and pottos.
Chimpanzee Trekking
Chimpanzee trekking is the premier activity in Kibale Forest National Park. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, only eight people are permitted to track each chimpanzee troop per day, and participants must be at least 15 years old.
To secure a spot, it is essential to book a permit at least one month in advance. The permit costs $250, effective July 1, 2020. A professional ranger guide will lead the trek, guaranteeing a safe and informative experience.
The chimpanzee trekking experience is divided into two sessions: Morning session: 8:00 am to midday and Afternoon session: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
As you trek through the forest, you’ll have the opportunity to observe other animals and birds as you gain insight into the natural habitat of the chimpanzees. Upon encountering the chimpanzees, you’ll be allowed to spend one hour observing their behavior while maintaining a safe distance of 7 meters.
Chimpanzee Habituation
The chimpanzee habituation process involves training these intelligent animals to become comfortable with human presence. This process is led by expert Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides and takes approximately two years to complete.
The habituated chimpanzees are significantly easier to track and observe compared to their wild counterparts, which can be unpredictable and elusive. The habituation experience is a full-day activity, beginning early in the morning before the chimpanzees leave their nests and concluding in the evening as they return to their nests.
Throughout the day, you’ll have the unique opportunity to observe the chimpanzees’ daily habits and behaviors. To ensure a comfortable experience, it’s recommended to bring packed lunch and water.

The Local Communities
The communities surrounding Kibale Forest National Park are primarily inhabited by the Batooro people, who are part of the Tooro tribe in Uganda. The Tooro Kingdom is led by a king known as the “Omukama” and is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and history.
The Batooro people are celebrated for their warm hospitality and calm demeanor.
