Gorilla Trekking
Mountain gorilla trekking is a highly sought-after adventure in Africa, offering a unique opportunity to venture into the continent's lush jungles, guided by experts, to catch a glimpse of our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom - the majestic mountain gorillas.
Gorilla Trek Duration
As you approach the gorilla group, the distinctive grunt of the silverback leader often echoes through the jungle, a precursor to the unforgettable encounter ahead. During your allotted hour, take your time to observe the family's dynamics: the adults feeding, siblings grooming, juveniles frolicking, and mothers nurturing their young.
The silverback, with his gentle yet authoritative presence, maintains harmony within the group, leading with a quiet confidence that ensures cohesion and protection. While gorillas are generally gentle, it's essential to respect their space and follow the guidelines and instructions provided by the park guides at all times. Keep a safe distance, avoid surrounding the group, and never approach them too closely, to ensure a safe and enriching experience.
Best Time for Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, rain or shine, even on public holidays. However, the activity may be halted or suspended due to security concerns or natural occurrences that necessitate park closure. The duration of the trek varies from 3 to 7 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla group, although sometimes contact can be made in less than an hour.
The experience begins with a comprehensive briefing from park rangers and guides, followed by the division of participants into groups of eight, based on fitness level, age, and preference. The rangers have real-time intelligence on the whereabouts of each gorilla group, thanks to an advance team that tracks the primates' movements from the previous day's sighting. This team maintains continuous communication with your group's leader, providing precise guidance on the most efficient route to take, ensuring a successful encounter with the gorillas.
An Hour With Gorillas
The deep grunt of the silverback echoes through the forest, a precursor to the unforgettable encounter ahead. Take your time to observe the gorilla family during your allotted hour, witnessing the adults feeding, siblings engaging in gentle grooming, juveniles frolicking, and mothers nurturing their young. Contrary to their powerful build, gorillas are remarkably gentle, with the silverback leading the group with a quiet confidence and charisma, ensuring harmony and protection. While the silverback's leadership is typically effortless, he will assert himself if necessary to address external threats. Remember to respect these magnificent creatures' space and follow the park guides' instructions at all times, keeping a safe distance and avoiding any actions that may be perceived as surrounding or threatening the group.
Gorilla Trekking Permits
The cost of gorilla permits in Uganda is currently set at $800 per person, with no discounts offered anymore during the rainy seasons. However, permits may be more readily available on short notice during these periods (March to May and October to November).
In contrast, permits for peak travel months (January to February and June to August) can sell out up to a year in advance, emphasizing the importance of early planning. Notably, Uganda offers relatively affordable permit prices compared to Rwanda, where they cost $1,500 per person.
For those seeking a more immersive experience, a habituation program in Rushaga, southern Bwindi, offers up to 4 hours of observation with a gorilla family, ideal for wildlife photographers and enthusiasts, at a cost of $1,500 per person.
Please note that gorilla permits are non-refundable, but the Uganda Wildlife Authority offers a 50% refund if a gorilla sighting is not successful, although this is a very rare occurrence.
